Motorhome Insurance

This type of specialist insurance covers your motorhome in a similar way to your car insurance covering your car when you are driving or when it is parked. A comprehensive motorhome insurance policy will cover you, your vehicle and any passengers for such events as theft, traffic and other accidents, and damage caused by fire, break-ins and other events.

Types of insurance for your motorhome

The highest level of cover is provided by a comprehensive insurance policy. The lowest level is third party only (TPO), or you could opt for third party theft and fire (TPTF) insurance for your motorhome.

It is essential to compare the different policies on offer and make sure they meet your personal requirements. Your needs will include what you want covering and how much financial protection you need. You should also consider where you want to go in your motorhome and ensure that you are covered for driving abroad if this is something you are likely to do.

Other things that motorhome insurance might include

Some elements of cover that you require may come as standard with your policy or you may be able to buy add-ons to enhance your insurance. This could include cover for personal belongings kept in your motorhome, awning cover, or windscreen cover

Your questions answered

Do I need motorhome insurance?

By law, you need to have insurance for your motorhome and it needs to cover the specific type of vehicle you have. You do get a choice of cover and it is important to choose the right level to meet your specific needs.

What is a motorhome?

A motorhome is typically defined as a vehicle that provides both living accommodation and transport. They may be large vehicles, such as coach and van conversions, or the type of RVs or recreation vehicles popular in the United States. They could also be smaller micro motorhomes and self-built vehicles. The specifications and design of your vehicle will determine if it is a motorhome and, if it is, you will need specialist motorhome insurance.

What is the difference between a motorhome and a campervan?

Knowing the difference between a motorhome and a campervan can be important as campervans can in some cases be covered by car or van insurance. This will depend on their specifications and is something that you will need to check before choosing the right insurance cover for you.

In general, motorhomes are larger with driving and living areas that are more clearly defined. Campervans tend to be smaller with more basic facilities in terms of the living options they provide.
